Using your Cell Phone in Costa Rica
Arrange With Your Cell Provider for International Coverage
Before coming to Costa Rica, check that your cell phone provider has an option to continue using your phone (at premium rates) while in Costa Rica. Some companies have minimal cost plans, but require a subscription; others charge by use. Using the cell phone for emergency calls is always useful, but -- don't forget using the phone for maps, internet searches, etc. Data use gets costly rapidly.
Download Google MAPS onto your Cell Phone
Before coming to Costa Rica you can download onto your cell phone (even onto an auxiliary SD card) maps of the whole country. Search Google for instructions for your type of phone. Then your phone data consumption is vastly less while driving around.
Unlocked Phone? Buy a Costa Rica SIM card
An unlocked phone (as used in Europe and many other places) means you can buy a SIM card with a local number while in the baggage area on your arrival into San José airport.... Look for the green and blue "KOLBI" sign as you enter the luggage delivery area. It takes about 30 minutes to activate the card so do this as soon as you enter the area, before collecting luggage. A card for about $15 will give you good coverage for maps and some internet searches for a few weeks, and you can add money in just about any small town or grocery store.
